It was February 23rd, 2014. My husband and I were visiting one of our favorite Atlanta churches, Riverstone, with some of our favorite friends, Aaron and Leah. We had just finished a week of heartbreak and healing after experiencing our second miscarriage. Before service ended, Aaron asked us what we’d already felt led to do– pray with the pastor and his wife. Tom Tanner, the pastor, boldly stated, “Every couple for which we’ve prayed has become pregnant. Are you ready…?”
The next moments were filled with the Holy Spirit and the sweetest words. (Here is a somewhat paraphrased version. I hope Tom approves. ☺️)
Father, we know you are good. Your mercies endure forever. You long to give us the desires of our heart. Right now, we are praying for a child. You know their journey up to this point. We pray for complete healing of Bobbie’s womb. We ask that you knit together their little one. Begin a good work in her! Bring them the blessing of a child. One that will love and follow you. A child that will experience a double-portion of your blessings. May they receive twice the love Chris and Bobbie have received in their lives. Twice the joy. Twice the peace. Twice the grace and mercies. Fill their life with a double portion!
Wow. Pulling out of the parking lot onto Stilesboro Road, those words resignated in our hearts. Our faith doubled instantly. We knew the Father would answer our prayers. Little did we know, that Sunday would mark Day 1 of our little boy’s growth and development. Talk about a double-portion of joy??
We have continued praying that prayer of “twice” over our son ever since. We truly hope he experiences MORE of everything. We wanted to remember this day of declaration to the Lord. So we decided to put a #2 on his collage above his crib. Ellis wasn’t born at 2:00 or on the second or in the second month, but we know exactly what it represents. One day, we will be able to share that story with our sweet son.
What a beautiful prayer for you to pray over their children?! We give you permission to steal it. Say it. Believe it. Our God is great and mighty and promises a double portion. There are quite a few verses in the Bible about this promise, but Isaiah 61:7 is my current favorite: “Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.”
May you and your little ones experience twice the blessings, too!
